How weighted grades work
Each score contributes in proportion to its course weight. Multiply every percentage score by its weight as a decimal and add the contributions. Category mode and direct weighted rows use the same transparent formula.
If your grades have no explicit weights, use the Average Grade Calculator instead.
Current grade versus course contribution
When only part of the course is completed, two numbers matter. Course contribution is the number of points already contributed to the full 100% course. Current normalized grade divides that contribution by completed weight to describe performance on completed work.
For 90% at 40% and 80% at 20%, the contribution is 52.0 course points across 60% completed weight. The normalized current grade is 86.67%.
Weights under or over 100%
A total below 100% can be valid during an in-progress course; the calculator warns that weight remains. A total above 100% blocks a projected full-course result because the weight model conflicts. GradeCompute never silently normalizes weights or hides this distinction.
Target score and bulk paste
The target solver uses completed contribution and the uncompleted share of the course. If 70 points have already been contributed across 80% weight and the course target is 90%, the remaining 20% requires 100%.
Bulk paste accepts label, score, and weight rows and shows a preview. Invalid rows must be corrected rather than silently discarded.
Weighted grade FAQs
How do weighted grades work?
Multiply each percentage by its course weight and add the resulting contributions.
What if my weights do not total 100%?
Below 100% may describe incomplete work; above 100% is an error for a full-course projection.
Why are current grade and course contribution different?
Current grade normalizes completed work; contribution shows the points already earned toward the full course.
Should ungraded work count as zero?
Only if the course policy records it as zero. Planned or blank work should not be silently treated as zero.
Can I use points and weights together?
Yes. Points + weights converts each earned/possible pair to a percentage before applying its weight.
How do I find the score needed on remaining work?
Enter completed rows and a target. The calculator solves for the average needed across the remaining course weight.
