How this result is calculated

percentage = (earned ÷ possible) × 100

17.0 ÷ 20.0 × 100 = 85.0%. Calculations use full precision; display rounding happens afterward.

How the grade calculator works

Choose Questions when every question has the same value, or Points when an assessment uses different point values or partial credit. Enter the possible amount and the amount earned. GradeCompute divides earned by possible, multiplies by 100, and assigns a letter from the active scale.

Correct and wrong answers stay synchronized. If a paper has 20 questions and 3 are wrong, the calculator uses 17 correct out of 20. The result is 85.0%, which is a B on the common example scale.

Custom grading scales and plus/minus grades

The default editor includes A+ through F thresholds. It is a common example, not a national standard. Change any threshold to match the syllabus or grading policy you are actually using. Your custom scale is stored only in this browser and can be cleared from the calculator settings.

Partial credit and rounding

Decimal correct answers and decimal points are supported. A response worth half credit can be entered as 0.5 question-equivalent or as its exact points. Calculations keep full precision and round only the displayed result. By default, the unrounded percentage determines the letter grade.

If your policy rounds before assigning a letter, enable that explicit setting. For example, 89.96% displays as 90.0% at one decimal place, but it remains below a 90% A- threshold unless round-before-letter is enabled.

Printable grading chart

For a whole-number question total, the chart lists every possible wrong-answer count, correct-answer count, percentage, and letter grade. Print it or save it as a PDF from your browser. CSV export keeps the same displayed precision and active scale.

Teachers grading a stack can preserve the total question count and scale while resetting only the current paper. Outside form fields, press W to add one wrong answer, Shift+W to subtract one, and R to reset the wrong-answer count.

Formula and calculation policy

The core formula is (earned ÷ possible) × 100. Blank fields are treated as missing, never as zero. A zero denominator blocks the result. Scores above 100% are allowed only when bonus mode is explicitly enabled.

See the full methodology and public test cases or use the grade-calculation checklist when your result differs from an LMS or gradebook.

Grade calculator FAQs

How do I calculate a grade percentage?

Divide the points or answers earned by the total possible, then multiply by 100.

Can I enter correct or wrong answers?

Yes. In Questions mode, choose either Correct or Wrong; the other value updates automatically.

Does the calculator support partial credit?

Yes. Enter decimal correct answers or exact decimal points to represent partial credit.

Can I change the grading scale?

Yes. Edit every plus/minus threshold and match the scale to the policy you are using.

Does it round before assigning a letter?

Not by default. Letters use the unrounded percentage unless you enable the visible round-before-letter option.

Are my grades saved or sent anywhere?

No grade values are sent to GradeCompute. Only optional interface preferences and the custom scale can be stored locally in your browser.
